Paris retrouvé by Catherine Le Ray

Paris retrouvé book by Catherine Le Ray

“Paris retrouvé” is a city guide, an illustrated book with 137 photographs, a tribute to great painters, musicians and writers, a journey through history and an autobiography all in one. The title of this book is also connected to the repertoire of chansons I have been singing for years. I am a former child of Montmartre, a former student of the Latin Quarter and a former resident of the Marais. My love affair with Paris began when I left the city. Memories of my childhood come flooding back. “Paris, I love you — I love you as one loves a sweetheart,” sang Maurice Chevalier. “When I lost sight of my homeland, I found it again in my heart” (Heinrich Heine, who lived in Paris from 1831 and was buried in Montmartre Cemetery in 1856). I dedicate this book to all those who have nourished my nostalgia for Paris, to those who shaped the backdrop of my childhood at the foot of the Moulin Rouge, between Sacré-Cœur and the old Opera House. I dedicate it to those who are part of Montmartre’s cultural heritage, such as Aristide Bruant, Renoir, Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Prévert and others, and to those who belong to the heritage of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, such as Villon, Voltaire, Baudelaire, Sartre, de Beauvoir and the many who remain unnamed. I also dedicate it to those who contributed to the city’s magnificent architecture, from Henri IV to Hector Guimard; to those who immortalized Paris in photographs, from Marville to Atget; to those who experienced the city’s hardships, from Étienne Marcel to Jean-Baptiste Clément; and to those who sang of their love for Paris, from Josephine Baker to Juliette Gréco. I dedicate this book to my husband and children — it was through them that my passion for showing Paris to visitors grew. I dedicate my book, my photographs and my repertoire to my father, an artist and theatrical set painter in Montmartre, and to my mother, both of whom instilled in me a love of art and taught me the meaning of nostalgia. Finally, I dedicate this book to all who have fallen in love with this city, from Héloïse and Abélard to the “Lovers on the Pont-Neuf.” (From the foreword)
